YUMMY MUMMY

QUOTED: “Oh, Texas. For shame. It is bad enough that 66% of us are overweight or obese, but now we learn our kids are really out of shape. Woefully out of shape. Only 30% of third graders could pass a fitness test, and fewer than 10% of high school seniors could pass it. Not Good. And before you start blaming the schools for your kid’s terrible fitness, studies suggest that our kids’ body mass indexes (BMI) increase over the summer. Which means change needs to start at home.”

I am so glad I am making better food choices for my daughter and myself.  My husband sent me this article in a link with the email subject: “Looks like your doing a good job with pumpkin. ”

IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE VALIDATED finally. I have been asking my husband and the grandma’s to feed my 15 month old better food choices and smaller portions for several months. I was getting resistance. “She is crying - She’s still hungry- feed her more” “Oh a little cookie or two won’t kill her” “Babies only/always stop eating when they are full” “Its not her weight preventing her from walking (at 14 months)” and she was getting fed her meal, then begging for bites from grown ups who eat slower than her/after her ALOT.

Good luck to all you who are trying to set a better example for your children. It is a very noble reason to change your eating habits for life. Loosing weight is a welcome side effect!

I wanted to post this as a reminder for myself (from the above link):

Unless you are excited to be following a very specific diet and exercise plan, do not try and change too much too fast. If you have been eating poorly and not exercising, both your body and your mind will have a lot of adjusting to do.

All the sugar and fat were actually quite enjoyable, and sitting on the couch didn’t feel too bad, either. If you try and change everything too quickly the odds are greater that you will feel bad, get discouraged, and give up. So be patient.

A time will come when a healthy snack will taste as good as the junk food you felt bad about eating, and you will look forward to your regular exercise.

Yummy Vegi Dinner!

I did it, I did it, I did it - YAY! (sing to tune of d-d-d-d-d-dora intro song) LOL

I had an ALL Veggie Dinner, and though I did not have a totally veggie only day like I set as my goal (see previous posts). I DID have a MEATLESS day and I think that is something to be proud of. It sure cuts down the calories when you cut down the meat.

I can do this on occasion. I can also make more fresh veggies with future meaty meals and consume a portion of veggies larger than the meat to fill up on.

One thing I learned tho is not to over cook Portabellas’ It was my first time to try them - and I grilled them like steak. I  have always heard of it, being like a steak…I can see I need more seasoning and less cook time, and it could be close. I LOVE mushrooms, but as a main course, not so much….maybe if I do it ‘right’ it could -

Next time I will not intend to make the portabella a main course but instead only eat 1/2 of one, as a side along with all the other veggie sides, and not have a “main course”. They are very over rated anyway :)

I was able to have a HUGE plate for of food and it was probably about 200 calories if even that. I haven’t added it to my Food Journal  yet so just guessing.

I challenge you to have just one veggie only dinner. There are a lot of options- search the net for recipes. I will post the recipe for mine so look for it in a few days. it included zucchini squash, asparagus, spaghetti squash and lots of garlic, and little spinach and onion too. For now, here is a picture of it, not the full plate…Vegtable Only Dinner
I could have had seconds but I was stuffed after that! The veggie grilling pan behind my plate is the best, you really should try one. It is great for any veg, just spray with PAM olive oil - toss veggies in garlic  - and a light seasoning or just salt and pepper is all I use - or spritz with the salad spritzers for some extra flavor! Then grill - use metal tongs to stir often. The handle bends up - great for storage and i also bend the handle  when grilling so I can close the lid of the grill! VERY handy.
